About Elyse Yvonne Slater
Elyse Yvonne Slater is a storyteller, mother of three, and a passionate advocate for SUDEP (Sudden Unexplained Death in Epileptic People). Living in Ulladulla on the south-east coast of New South Wales, Australia, she has used her personal experience with epilepsy as the foundation for her creative works. Elyse writes from a place of deep emotion, resilience, and purpose, bringing to life stories that resonate with courage, survival, and hope.
A Personal Journey with Epilepsy
Elyse’s life has been profoundly impacted by epilepsy, but through this challenge, she has embarked on a never-ending journey of personal and spiritual growth. Although epilepsy has been a source of hardship, it has also become the catalyst for her advocacy work and personal awareness. She strives to help others understand the true impacts of epilepsy and SUDEP, both on those who live with it and the families who support them.
“Epilepsy hasn’t just impacted my life negatively; it’s led me to personal and spiritual growth. It has led me to find inner strength, and I hope to share that with others who are facing the same challenges.”
Life Beyond Epilepsy
Beyond her advocacy, Elyse enjoys a range of hobbies that bring her joy, including crochet, songwriting, and visual art. She loves spending time outdoors and connecting with people through her part-time work at Woolworths, where she brightens the day of those she meets. Elyse shares a home with her partner, Ben, and their adopted cat, Lilly, who provides emotional support and even senses when a seizure is about to happen.
“My advice as a parent is to treasure every minute you have with your kids, while they still think you’re the Bee’s Knees.”
Writing
Elyse is the author of The Epileptic Girl, a book that reflects her journey with epilepsy and survival. She is also working on multiple projects, including When Pigs Fly (satirical sci-fi), Annabelle’s Grogans (children’s book), When No Means Happy Birthday (horror short story), and a deeply personal memoir. Through her stories, Elyse seeks to connect with readers, raise awareness about epilepsy, and empower those who are affected by it.
